Let Go of the Reins

Kirstin Murphy

We as a family have been given the privledge to ride some friends horses in their arena whenever our schedule permits. They have two horses each with different reins. I have been learning how to help each horse know what I want them to do as I try to lead them with their specific rein. Each horse a little bit different.

My husband had horses at his house in his late teenage years and early 20s and has told me stories of being able to ride the horses into the desert even in the night. It would get dark and he wouldn’t even know his way home. But!!!! he could let go of the reins and the horse knew the way home. That’s pretty impressive!

I recently heard the Lord say to me, “let go of the reins.” Immediately, I had a picture of both of these stories….I think most of the time I like to be the one with the reins in my hand, trying to decide which way to go and how to steer to what I’d like. Ultimately, God is inviting me into the second story, to trust that he knows the direction and the way to get where we are headed. So here we go, I’ve let go of the reins and plan to enjoy the ride. Want to join me? I do know the Lord is trustworthy!!

The enemy continues to use one of his oldest tricks of having you question who you really are and what you really have. Remember the question he asked Jesus in the desert? “If you are the son of God”. (Matt 4:4)Imagine that, the enemy is bold enough to ask Jesus who does He think He is. If he is confident enough to ask Jesus this question, you have to know he is not going to think twice getting you to question your identity. At present he has our families and children even questioning their gender creation from God Almighty. Hence, the transgender dysphoria that we are experiencing in our present culture. So my question to you is this. What of your identity has the enemy caused you to question. Who you really are in Christ, do you think you are unworthy of even knowing God, do you believe that shame is part of your makeup or do you even think for a moment that you are not who God says you are. I am being truthful here in saying that yes I have at times fell into that trap of believing for a moment one of the above. Specifically, the shame and unworthiness of who I am because of something I have done that I believe has separated me from God. What a lie from the enemy. Nothing can separate us from His love. (Rom. 8:35-39) When you believe a lie like that you are only empowering the liar! We certainly know who that is. Jesus Christ’s death on the cross redeemed you , forgave you of all your sins and gave you eternal life. Now that is the absolute truth. He gave you your identity, created a plan for you and placed His spirit in you expecting supernatural results. He told us that it is His good pleasure to give us the Kingdom. Luke 12:32) Wow!! He gave us the Kingdom. We are kids of the King and have the freedom to run into the throne room and crawl up in the lap of our Loving Heavenly Father. This is our identity, not doubt, shame or unworthiness! The next time you do something out of God’s normal and follow the world’s normal don’t think for one second that God has abandoned you because of what you have done. There are countless stories in the Bible of God using people who are murderers , liars and cheats to accomplish His will and complete the plans He has for their life. Moses, David and Paul are just some examples. All committed murder or caused murders but not for one second did God turn His back on any of them. All three accomplished great things for the Kingdom!! So the next time the enemy lies to you and tells you that you are shameful or unworthy remember your Heavenly Father still is passionately in love with you regardless. So much so that He is continuing to work in you the plan for your life. He is faithful to complete the work that He has started in you. (Phil. 1:6) So don’t believe the lie of the enemy, just believe what God says about you. You are His, you are an overcomer and you are more than a conqueror! Now that is the truth!!

I was invited to speak at Church for the Nations women’s conference last week. What a great time we all had as we worshiped, laughed, learned, danced, prayed and hung out together as women! There is always value in making time to come together, to talk about life- having real face to face conversations. I have a dear friend I schedule weekly/biweekly walks with, which are a treasure to my soul! I also have a group of women I work out with at Revelation Wellness every week, we have a weekly elders meeting where we worship, pray and talk and I love gathering every Sunday as a church family. Jesus and relationships, that’s what it’s all about! Find your people and do life together, face to face! 1 Thessalonians 5:11 "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing."
